The Nevada City Downtown Historic District has an area of 160 acres containing seventy contributing buildings.

Firehouse #1

Firehouse #1, a two-story, brick building at 215 Main Street, was built in 1861. Around 1890, the original brick facade was enhanced with a wooden Eastlake porch and bell tower.

The firehouse remained on active duty as Nevada Hose #1 headquarters until 1938. In 1985, the California Department of Parks and Recreation provide financial support for restoration and stabilization.

The building is open to the public as the Firehouse No. 1 Museum operated by the Nevada County Historical Society.

Union Building

The Union Building, 301 Broad Street at Pine Street, was built in 1854 by Mr. Burlington and remodeled in 1904 under the direction of C. E. Wilson. The second-story facade on Broad Street is faced with white enameled brick.
