The Spanish name Contra Costa derives from the Mexican tradition of calling this territory the coast opposite San Francisco. On February 18, 1850, when Contra Costa County was designated as one of the twenty-seven original California counties, it included all of the land in today's Alameda County. Alameda County was carved out of Contra Costa County in 1853 ending up with most of the coast opposite San Francisco including Oakland and Berkeley.
