Historic Sites in Coconino County

Coconino County is situated in northern Arizona bordering Utah.

With an area of 18,661 square miles (48,332 kilometers), Coconino County is larger than Denmark, but it has a population density of only about six people per square mile (two people per square kilometer). Approximately half of the county's 116,000 residents live in Flagstaff, the county seat. Almost thirty percent of the people identify themselves as American Indians - Navajo, Havasupai, Hopi, and other tribes.

Grand Canyon National Park is located in Coconino County, sixty miles north of Williams. Old Route 66 and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad ran through Flagstaff and Williams. It is still possible to reach the South Rim of the Grand Canyon by rail. Board Amtrak in Chicago, Los Angeles or New Orleans and transfer to the Grand Canyon Railroad in Williams.

A surreal and sentient Coconino County provided the background for the Krazy Kat comic strip created by George Joseph Herriman and published in William Randolph Hearst's newspapers from 1913 until 1944.
